Want to skate?

Interested in getting out on the track yourself in team colours or referee stripes?

South Sea Roller Derby has recently undergone some changes and we've done away with those pesky 8 week boot camps twice a year with do or die testing at the end! We now offer Freshie training, for aspiring derby players and refs, twice a week permanently and part of the restructure means more intakes in 2013. The intakes for he first half of the year are:

  • 20th January
  • 3rd March
  • 14th April
  • 26th May

Some good things to know

  • Freshmeat training is for skaters with no derby experience.  You must however be able to propel yourself around the rink without holding onto the rail before joining
  • Freshmeat Training is 6.30pm to 8.30pm Friday evenings and 1.00pm to 3.00pm Sundays
  • Training costs $40 per month
  • You also require Skate Victoria insurance which costs $45 for all of 2013 for skaters and $20 for refs.

The Process:

We can only offer a limited number of places in each intake, dependent on how many freshies we currently have in the program. Email your interest to freshmeat@southsearollerderby.com by midnight Sunday the week before each intake.

Think carefully before pressing that send button as derby is a big commitment! Only apply if you can attend the training times listed, can skate without using the rails and are prepared to pre-pay!

The Fine Print

  • There are a few sets of rather dubious skates you can borrow if you need to
  • You will not be allowed on the rink without a helmet, mouthguard, elbow pads, wrist guards and knee pads. We have some safety equipment you can hire for $1 an item (approx 10 sets so first in safest dressed), but you will need your own mouthguard and we don't hire those: eew!
  • Applications for membership and insurance forms will be available to complete on the day so arrive at least 15 minutes early to fill these out and gear up
  • We have attendance requirements you must meet to ensure your place in the Freshie program next month

Don't want to skate?

Even if you're not keen on being on skates there are other ways to get involved at South Sea Roller Derby. We are always on the lookout for Volunteers, Bench Staff (Benchies) and Non Skating Officials (NSO's) to help out with our bouts and our training.

Volunteers do all the things that help our bouts run smoothly. From manning the merch table to greeting fans at the door, volunteers are highly valued members of the league.

Our Bench Staff are there to keep their team organised and motivated during the games. Bench Managers decide who goes on the track, and Bench Coaches adjust the team's strategy during the bout. If you are one of those people that love sports strategy, have an understanding of gameplay and know exactly what the team needs to do to win - then become a benchie!

NSO's are there trackside to help in the running of the actual game. Roles range from penalty box timing, to scoring and everything in-between. It's the closest you can get to the action without being on wheels!

If being volly, benchie or NSO seems right for you please email freshmeat@southsearollerderby.com to express your interest.

See you at the rink!
