South Sea Roller Derby has recently undergone some changes and we’ve done away with those pesky 8 week bootcamps twice a year with do or die testing at the end!  We now offer Freshie training twice a week permanently and part of the restructure means 7 intakes in 2012:

  • February 26th
  • April 15th
  • May 30th
  • July 22nd
  • August 19th
  • September 30th and
  • November 11th

(we might have mentioned 9 intakes in the last post... but we’ve modified the dates to match our testing cycles  - sorry about that!)

Some good things to know:

  • Freshmeat training is for skaters with no derby experience.  You must however be able to propel yourself around the rink without holding onto the rail before joining
  • Freshmeat Training is 6.30pm to 8.30pm Friday evenings and 1.00pm to 3.00pm Sundays
  • Training costs $40 per month
  • You also require Skate Victoria insurance which costs $35 for all of 2012

The Process:

We can only offer a limited number of places in each intake, dependent on how many freshies we currently have in the program.  Email your interest to freshmeat@southsearollerderby.com by midnight Sunday the week before each intake and the appropriate number of skaters will be selected at random to commence freshie training on the following Sunday.   Think carefully before pressing that ‘send’ button as derby is a big commitment!  Only apply if you can attend the training times listed, can skate without using the rails and are prepared to pre-pay!

For the February 26th intake we have 20 openings and must receive your expression of interest by midnight Sunday Feb 19!!!

The fine print:

  • There are a few sets of rather dubious skates you can borrow if you need to
  • You will not be allowed on the rink without a helmet, mouthguard, elbow pads, wrist guards and knee pads. We have some safety equipment you can hire for $1 an item (approx 10 sets – first in safest dressed), but you will need your own mouthguard – we don’t hire those: eew!
  • Applications for membership and insurance forms will be available to complete on the day so arrive at least 15 minutes early to fill these out and gear up
  • We have attendance requirements you must meet to ensure your place in the Freshie program next month

See you at the rink!

It was probably the most exciting two minutes in the history of the South Sea Sirens. Jam one of the RHYTHM AND BRUISE bout against VRDL’s Queen Bees, and Sirens jammer Em C Hammer shot to the front of the pack, taking lead jammer, chalking up four points, and calling the jam before VRDL’s Lucky Day could score. THE SIRENS IN THE LEAD!! Sure, that was the only time that our girls muscled their toe-stop in front, but it was an achievement – and one of many for the brave Sirens.

Taking on the more experienced and undefeated Queen Bees, the ladies of the South Sea Roller Derby league were as fierce and fearless as ever. While VRDL’s KillJoy Division, Speedy Wasabi and Miss Chivas led a point-scoring blitz in the first half, they had to fight for every point amidst tough Sirens defence. And South Seas’ jammers were still starring, with Lola Skater posting an impressive 10 points in the final jam of the first half.

At half time, the score was 92-31, and the Queen Bees kept adding points in the second. While the difference did blow out past 100, the Sirens’ valiant defence, and some big jamming from The Toecutter and Pacmanda, reigned the margin back in.

Full time saw a more worldly-wise Sirens downed by 80 points, 158-78, in what was still a thrilling game of derby for the 600-strong crowd.

(Post-match, the Sirens dominated full-contact Twister. Just sayin’.)

Thanks VRDL Queen Bees for a great bout and a great experience – with plenty of rhythm and bruises on both sides!

The South Sea Sirens take on Ballarat’s Brat Pack in their final match this year, in Ballarat in December.

Before then though, come and see SSRD’s home teams in their final battle for 2011! The Dolly Rogers take on the Cutthroat Charmers in SOMEWHERE OVER THE PAINBOW on November 5. Tickets on sale soon!

The South Sea Sirens really soared - and it's all thanks to our beloved fans! So much derby love to all those who donated to the "Help our Sea-Gals fly!" appeal - your generosity not only got the girls to Perth, but also inspired them to win, and win big!

The Sirens held off the home-team WARD 132-80, and stayed undefeated. Across the Skate Divide was our first interstate bout, and it has boosted the league in so many ways! We'll never forget those fans who got us across the line.. and across the border!

Look forward to seeing you all rinkside at Geelong as the Sirens take on Geelong's Bloody Marys on August 13, and back home when VRDL's Queen Bees come to Keysborough to do battle on September 10. Stay tuned for plenty more exciting SSRD news, and thanks for being part of the South Sea smash-family.

The Cutthroat Charmers were out for revenge.. and wow did they get it! Flying a banner that said "Fear the Purple", these lavender ladies were not joking.. and the valiant Dolly Rogers bore the brunt.

Getting off to a strong start and never looking back, the Charmers were too good, as they say, on the night. Led by captain Harmin' Miranda, and with a great debut by Battle Barbie, the whole team looked ferocious in their second outing of the year.

Previous victors the Dolly Rogers were battling with stars Oriental Xpress and Nurse Pain on the injury list and in the coaching box. New captain Dani Darko did the ladies in red proud in defence, and four debut skaters made a promising start. Meanwhile, the indefatigable Dollys' jammers were sweating blood for every point.

The crowd were treated to some big bumps and thumps, in what was SSRD's most physical bout to date.

At the final whistle, the Cutthroat Charmers took it 154 to the Dolly Rogers on 44.

And both teams will be raring for the rematch at Springers Leisure Centre on July 9, as SSRD presents MONSTERS BRAWL!

It was just the first bout of the season, but it’s got South Sea Roller Derby league off to a blinding start in 2011.

A crowd of hundreds packed into Keysborough’s Springers Leisure Centre to see the Cutthroat Charmers take on the Dolly Rogers. And what they got was a night of hard skating, big hits, and even bigger personalities!

Nerves were running high with plenty of fresh faces gearing up for their first public bruising. For the undefeated Charmers, Blitzkrieg Deluxe, The Flyin' Nun Chucker, Mollycious Intent, The Toecutter, and TiTasaurus were all making their spectacular debuts, while league founder Misty Meaner was finally taking to the track for the first time with SSRD.

On the Dollys side, Pacmanda, Ethel Noll and Dani Darko were the high-energy first-time bouters, while import Lola Skater was debuting for the league.

Crowd favourites Em C Hammer and Mad Mel Arena lined up for the first jam of the night, and the Mad Mel got the Charmers away to a healthy lead. But the Dollys weren’t taking that lying down.

With more than half their team jamming strongly, the red team had the lead back within two jams.. and kept building. By the half-time break, the Cutthroat Chalmers were on 59 points, chasing the Dolly Rogers on a healthy 86.

The Charmers weren’t discouraged though, and fought valiantly at the jammer line and in the pack. It was the Dollys defence that kept them in front though, and kept the purple jammers increasingly frustrated.

In spite of the margin, tension was high and individual contests provided spectacular battles. Newcomers Pacmanda and The Flyin' Nun Chucker were both credits to their teams in the final hard-fought jam, but it was the Dollys who won the night, 153 to 115.

That was the match, but it wouldn’t be roller derby without plenty of off-field antics. The Cutthroat Charmers set the night’s fun vibe, delivering a fully choreographed dance routine to the strains of House of Pain’s Jump Around as they were introduced to the track. Big jumps, big whips, and even a cartwheel from the spectacular Mad Mel Arena had the place in fits.

The half-time break saw the crowd get into the same spirit, for an impromptu performance of the Time Warp.

And of course, the colourful theme saw a raid on the costume shops of Melbourne’s south-east, with a crowd full of Rocky Horror characters.

SSRD thanks all our skaters, refs, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, family and friends for their continuing support.. we love that you’re as derby crazy as we are, and we’ll see you on May 14!

South Sea Roller Derby (SSRD) hit the shores in South East Melbourne in late 2009 and now has over 60 members and two bouting teams - the Cutthroat Charmers and the Dolly Rogers (check them out on YouTube).  The teams first went head to head in front of a sold out crowd at Springers Leisure Centre on August 28, with the Cutthroat Charmers narrowly grabbing a victory.   It was a nail-biter of a match, with more hard hitting action to come in the near future.  Check out the photos here

SSRD is skater owned and operated so everyone has a part in building it up and keeping it going.  Two fundraisers have been held (a Roller Disco and an 80’s Night), with more planned soon.

Everyone had a blast dragging out their best retro gear and shoulder pads and glow sticks ruled supreme. For some, however, the nights were a good excuse to dress the way they always do without standing out so much.

Feeling like you might be ready to come aboard? Take this short quiz to find out if you’re the kind of girl we are looking for:

Do people describe you as brave (or maybe stupid)?

Do bruises make you say “Whoa! Check this out!”?

Do you wish you had a superhero-esque alter ego you could call upon in times of trouble?

Do you love stripey socks, hotpants, animal print and fishnets?

Do you love a good challenge?

Do you like working as part of a team, pitching in wherever it’s needed?

Are you ready to push yourself physically?

If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, then SSRD is the place for you!  For info about our next Freshmeat intake contact our Freshmeat Coordinator. If you can’t skate or you’re not a female, you can still Get Involved.

But first, a word of warning. Roller derby has a way of consuming your life because it is just that awesome.  If you’re looking for something kinda fun and casual, try Zumba. But if you’re ready to train harder than you’ve ever trained before, push your limits, meet heaps of cool chicks, learn new skills both on and off the track and find out just how gutsy you actually are, then drop anchor here.

Ahoy mateys!
